Message de Deborah Cahill

Bonjour à tous,

Je suis très heureuse de vous annoncer que le banc de la famille Cahill est terminé grâce à l'excellent travail de B&M Custom Metal / BM Transport in Shawville (Facebook) et qu'il sera placé au cimetière Sainte-Anne de L’Île-du-Grand-Calumet. Megan et Sébastien ont été d'une aide précieuse au cours des derniers mois pour la conception, la fabrication et l'achèvement du banc.

Le banc n'est pas seulement un endroit où les gens peuvent s'asseoir sous le magnifique nouveau pavillon tout en rendant visite à leurs proches, mais aussi une pièce monumentale dont je sais que ma grand-mère et mon grand-père seraient très fiers.  Même si je n'ai jamais rencontré mon grand-père Alphonse Cahill, j'ai eu une relation très spéciale avec ma grand-mère Gladys McVeigh Cahill. Nous nous rendions sur L’Île tous les week-ends et y avons passé de nombreux étés. 

Elle nous a appris à quel point les habitants de L’Île sont exceptionnels - ils étaient pour elle une famille et une communauté.  Mon père Raymond était tout aussi fier d'habiter L’Île-du-Grand-Calumet. Ma grand-mère avait payé à l'avance l'ensemble de la parcelle familiale où reposent plusieurs de mes proches. J'ai donc estimé qu'il était normal de rendre la pareille à un endroit que je considère comme mon chez-moi en faisant don de ce banc.

Nous remercions tout particulièrement Guylaine La Salle et les bénévoles du Groupe L’Île-du-Grand-Calumet d'avoir eu la vision d'explorer et de partager l'histoire de L’Île-du-Grand-Calumet. Cela n'aurait pas été possible sans vous.

Et à mes chers cousins Anne Frederick-Lemaire et Stéphane Lemaire qui m'ont aidé avec l'histoire de notre famille en prenant de nombreuses photos des parcelles familiales tout en endurant les journées chaudes de l'été.  Bien que je vive sur la côte ouest de l'île de Vancouver, nos pensées et notre amour vont à vous tous. Mon mari Graham Trafford et moi-même vous remercions tous d'avoir participé à cette reconnaissance de ma famille et de la communauté qui me rappelle de très bons souvenirs.

Hi everyone,

I am so excited to say that the Cahill family bench is completed thanks to the fine work of B&M Custom Metal / BM Transport in Shawville (Facebook) and will be placed at Ste-Anne Cemetery on L’Île-du-Grand-Calumet Island. Megan & Sebastien has been amazing to work with over the past few months of helping with the design, fabricating and completion of the bench.

The bench is not only a place for those to sit under the beautiful new Gazebo while visiting their loved ones, but a monumental piece that I know my grandmother and grandfather would be very proud of.  While I never met my grandfather Alphonse Cahill, I did have a very special relationship with my grandmother Gladys McVeigh Cahill.  We visited the Island every weekend and spent many summers there. 

She taught us how truly special the people on the Island are – they were family and community to her.  My father Raymond was equally proud to call L’Île-du-Grand-Calumet Island his home.   My grandmother had pre-paid for the entire family plot where many of my loved one’s rest so I felt it only fitting to give back to a place I call home by donating this bench.

A special thanks to Guylaine La Salle and the volunteer of the Groupe L’Île-du-Grand-Calumet for having the vision to explore and share the history of L’Île-du-Grand-Calumet Island. This would not be possible without you.

And to my dear cousins Anne Frederick-Lemaire and Stéphane Lemaire who helped me with the history of our family taking numerous pictures of family plots while enduring the hot days of summer. 

While I live on the west coast on Vancouver Island our thoughts and love to go out to all of you. My husband Graham Trafford and I thank all of you for being a very special part of this recognition of my family and the community that holds very fond memories for me.
